Impact of soil‐structure interaction on the effectiveness of Tuned Mass Dampers

Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) can represent an attracting solution to mitigate vibrations of a structure under seismic excitation, but their effectiveness be considerably altered by the dynamic interaction with foundation soil. The available design criteria for TMDs do not account these effects and therefore lead non-optimised structural performance. In this paper investigation on TMD whole soil-structure system is presented, objective highlighting parameters governing response device as protection. An interpretative model soil-structure-TMD expressed in rigorous non-dimensional form proposed, extensive global sensitivity analysis its performance harmonic loading carried out. identification typical regions shows that mainly controlled limited number describing behaviour interaction, such structure-to-soil relative stiffness those rocking. leading either favourable or detrimental effect due are also identified, two methodologies proposed literature critically assessed light framework proposed.
